Post-Study Work Visas Compared: UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany

The degree is only half the plan. What happens after graduation — how long you can stay, what work you can do, and whether the route leads to residency — differs enormously between countries. Compare before you choose where to study, not after.

United Kingdom: The Graduate Route

The UK's Graduate visa lets you stay and work for 18 months after a bachelor's or master's degree (three years after a PhD). It is unsponsored — any job, any employer, or self-employment. It does not itself lead to settlement; to stay longer you switch into the Skilled Worker route, which requires a sponsoring employer and a minimum salary. Plan your job hunt to start well before graduation, because 18 months passes quickly.

Canada: The PGWP

Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit runs up to three years for eligible programmes of two years or more. Crucially, PGWP time counts toward permanent residence through Express Entry — Canadian work experience earns significant CRS points. But eligibility now depends on your programme and institution type, so verify PGWP eligibility before accepting any offer. The PGWP is a one-per-lifetime permit; use it deliberately.

Australia: The Temporary Graduate (485) Visa

Australia's Temporary Graduate visa gives most master's graduates around two years of full work rights, with longer stays for some qualifications and regional study. Regional campuses can add an extra year — one reason to look beyond Sydney and Melbourne. From the 485, pathways lead to skilled visas (189/190/491) through the points system, where age, English scores, and work experience all count.

Germany: 18 Months to Find Your Job

Germany grants graduates of German universities an 18-month residence permit to seek employment, with full work rights while searching. Once you land a qualifying job, you switch to an EU Blue Card or a national work permit, and permanent residence can follow in as little as 21 to 27 months with German language skills. Combined with near-zero tuition, Germany's total cost-to-career equation is among the best anywhere.

The Comparison That Actually Matters

  • Longest unsponsored stay: Canada (up to 3 years) and PhD graduates in the UK (3 years).
  • Clearest residency pathway: Canada, followed by Germany and Australia.
  • Cheapest total journey: Germany, by a wide margin.
  • Fastest to start working anywhere: UK Graduate Route — no sponsorship needed from day one.

Plan Backwards From the Career

If your goal is permanent migration, weight Canada and Germany heavily. If your goal is brand-name education plus early career experience before returning to Nigeria, the UK's shorter route may serve you perfectly. If you want lifestyle plus points-tested options, Australia fits. There is no universally "best" country — there is only the best match for your field, budget, and ten-year plan. Rules change often, so confirm current terms on each government's official site before deciding.
